Men in Uniform
Men in Uniform
This body of artwork developed from research into the history of warfare and military uniforms. I was interested in how early uniforms were often richly coloured and embellished. However, the historical uniforms I photographed in detail were often worn and threadbare, time had taken its toll and these empty shells were shadows of their former glorified past. In contrast, contemporary uniforms were about camouflage and hiding the individual, the modern soldier was shaped and trained to fulfil a purpose. My research involved interviewing those who had been involved in military service and photographing them clothed in military uniforms. These final photographs allow us to be intimately close to the surface of the body, while the person retains their anonymity and distance.
Men in Uniform was exhibited in the Oliver Dowling Gallery, Dublin in 1992 and as part of the group exhibition Warworks, Women Photography and the Art of War curated by Val Williams and exhibited in1994 in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
