Waiting to Surface was created for the Irish Exhibition of Living Art in 1987 and exhibited in the Guinness Hop Stores, Dublin. The installation consisted of 6 glass tanks/light boxes. The tanks contained a selection of natural and 2nd hand objects held below the water’s surface. I was interested in the idea of the diorama, where 3D objects are placed in front of a 2D landscape or backdrop to suggest narrative. Irish folklore, fairy tale, and religious imagery provided a rich source of moral tales, which were indicative of social attitudes towards women. The glass tanks function both as containers and windows into an imaginative space.
